Don't Set Your Year’s Writing Goal Just Yet...

Hey Writer

Yep, it's that time... when we start thinking about what we want to achieve this year. But before we even think about writing goals for this year - wait just a minute!

How about we take a minute to give ourselves a pat on the back for last year?

Even if you didn't quite get to where you wanted to this year ( and I don't know anyone who did) - let's take a moment to appreciate where you DID get to. So grab a quiet 15 minutes - and answer these 6 questions to get clear on where you've been and what you learnt about yourself as a writer over the past year.

Some of you might just like to use these thought-provoking questions as a way to dump all the frustrations of last year - others may just like to use it as a way to think ahead.

It’s a no-brainer that the very first step in planning and success is to reflect on where you’ve been and where you are right now... So let's jump in...

Q1: What was your writing goal last year – and did you achieve it?

Q2: If you did - great! If not, what do you think were the main things that got in the way? (Aside from the world-wide pandemic...)

Q3: What else did you achieve this year – (don’t forget the little wins!) Everyone has a different idea about what success looks like - but what about the small positive movements forward? The little wins. For some people it can be finishing a piece of writing, for others it can be as small as getting a great response to a story from a writing group. Or coming up with a great title.

List your small wins and accomplishments of the past year.

Q4: Craft wise, what do you think you got better at last year? And what do you want to improve on in 2023?

Q5: What was your biggest writerly challenge last year?

Q6: What can you feasibly do to overcome that same challenge this year?
